PPF vs ceramic coating: which is better in the Gulf?

Short answer

PPF is a physical film about 190 µm thick that absorbs stone chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is a liquid layer of one or two microns that adds gloss and makes washing easier, but it can't stop a chip. On Gulf highways PPF protects far more. Many owners fit PPF first and add a coating on top.

Why the difference matters on Gulf roads

Thickness is the whole story. A film about a hundred times thicker than a coating can take a stone at highway speed; a coating can't. The Gulf adds sand and grit in the wind, and heat that bakes bird droppings into the clear coat. The UAE reached 51.6°C in May 2025, a record for the month, and that same heat is what lets a self-healing top coat recover from light scratches.

When ceramic coating alone is enough

  • You lease the car or change it every two or three years.
  • You mostly drive in town, with few highway kilometres.
  • Your priority is shine and easier washing, not chip protection.

When PPF is the better choice

  • You drive daily on highways or between emirates.
  • The car is new, dark or high value, and you plan to keep it.
  • You want the factory paint protected for resale.
  • You want a matte, black or coloured finish as well as protection.

Can you use both?

Yes, and many owners do. The common setups are PPF on the whole car with a coating on top, or PPF on the front panels and coating on the rest, which balances protection and cost. A coating on PPF adds slickness and makes the film easier to wash. Ask your fitter which coatings the film maker approves, because the wrong product can affect the warranty.

Does TRORO sell ceramic coating?

No. TRORO GCC supplies paint protection film and window film. The hydrophobic top coat on AX10, AX7 Pro, AX6 and Colour PPF already makes water bead and roll off, so you get much of the easy-wash benefit from the film itself. Compare the range on our paint protection film page.

FAQ

Common questions

Does ceramic coating stop stone chips?

No. A coating is only one or two microns thick, so it has no real impact resistance. PPF is the product that absorbs stone chips.

Which lasts longer, PPF or ceramic coating?

PPF. UAE market estimates give 5–10 years for quality PPF and 2–5 years for a ceramic coating, depending on the product and the care it gets.

Should I put ceramic coating on top of PPF?

It's optional. It adds slickness and easier washing but no extra chip protection. A hydrophobic film such as TRORO AX10 already repels water, so many owners skip it.

Which is better for a new car in Dubai?

If you'll keep the car and drive on highways, PPF on at least the front end. If you'll change it in two or three years and mainly want shine, a ceramic coating may be enough.
